I think Tony Soprano from the Sopranos / Scott Shelby from Heavy Rain (Sam Douglas) / Jeff Garlin from most notably Curb Your Enthusiasm, have a build which can enable a fairly warm and light hearted personality while maintaining an appearance of being capable but disadvantaged. I don't think a plain sailing explorer makes for a very interesting character.
17th-20th century clothing and gear. I'll pick and choose individual garments I feel as though express an essence of exploration as well as something more civilian so as not to make the character too lawful, more on the chaotic side of the spectrum.
