How games affect the world: Millitary recruitment and political games.

Starting at home, we've the MOD's ad campaign with accompanying web-game. Players are given an introduction to some activities in the millitary through several missions. The campaign is aimed at 16-21 year olds who have no career path in mind, the campaign boasts that the millitary will allow then to develope expertise, teamwork, decision making and leadership skills as well as boosting fitness and mental sharpness.

The campaign proved to be very effective as it addressed the issue that young people didn't have the pre-requisite skills to join the army. The proof is in the pudding, we now have a full manned army as a result.
The campaign achieved 27 major awards for it's creativity and effectiveness, including the D&AD, ANNAs, Eurobest, Creative Circle, Marketing Week, Revolution, The Recruitment advertising awards and BIMAs.

The site got around 2 million unique visitors as a result of the TV ad campaign.

America's Army is the US millitary's solution to recruiting the young. It's a fully fledged videogame/sim, with training and a multiplayer skirmish mode.
There's been 3 major releases for the series, with improvements over the previous iterations however the third has received some criticism for a hap-hazard launch with bugs and connection issues. Licensing issues delayed the launch which didn't help. The result of being released much later with little to no change in the actual graphical quality made it look some-what dated.

The game has been criticised for contributing to the millitainment complex. The game is undoubtedly the most advanced in terms of games specifically made for any sort of political indoctrination or persuasion, which is why it's so controversial.

The game's training section is detailed enough to at least be used as a small introductory session for actual recruits in the Army.

Special training applications have been made using the base game, particularly useful for the Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station training. In real life this device is used by a soldier in the protective cabin of the vehicle, they have a screen to see out through the top-mounted camera which also allows them to aim their weapon, the game simulates this so they can practice with a computer in exactly the same way allowing for much cheaper training.

There's controversy concerning the fact that the game isn't advertised as a recruitment tool, it's a little disingenuous and predatory in that respect but if it were transparent in it's motives then it would be far less appalling to people.
As well as that they allow minors to play the game which is some-what
